CLIA recognizes the importance of promoting wellness for the profession. For those in need of mental health support, there are resources available in all our Subscriber jurisdictions through their lawyer assistance programs. See this post for more information.

CLIA aims to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness within our profession and help get the conversation started. The Bell Let’s Talk website contains a toolkit that may be of assistance. The website also contains numerous mental health resources, including a drop-down menu to filer resources, or a search bar to search by keyword. See this post for more details.

Courses designed to help lawyers recognize the symptoms of mental health issues in their colleagues and themselves, and that offer supports and treatment options are invaluable. Mental Health and Wellness in the Legal Profession is a national self-learning program designed to provide Canadian lawyers, judges and law students with education, supports, and resources to assist them in understanding mental health and addiction issues. See the first in a new series by Erin Durant about mental health and wellness in the legal profession. Erin is the founder of Durant Barristers a litigation, investigation and sport law firm. She is also the author of “It Burned Me All Down” which is a book about her experience with mental illness as a practicing lawyer. The book also makes recommendations for legal workplaces to improve their work environments. She also has experience representing lawyers in both malpractice and disciplinary hearings.
