Time Management as a Young Lawyer

* Matthew Coleman

One of the biggest challenges that a new lawyer can face is managing time effectively. Between juggling multiple cases, meeting deadlines, and staying on top of client communication, it’s easy to feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

I have had the luxury of having built habits and strategies over time that help me to stay organized and avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed. Here are some of the time management hacks that work for me:

1) Prioritize Like a Pro: There’s a reason why medical professionals use triaging to determine the order of priority for providing treatment – because it works! Apply the same logic to your practice. Start each day identifying the tasks that must get done that day and start with those. Additionally, employ tricks like the “five minute rule” to your day. If it only takes five minutes to do, do it immediately.

2) Embrace Technology: Tools like case management software, task tracks, and email templates save time and can be your best friend. Automate what you can and whenever you can!

3) Communicate Boundaries: Being clear with colleagues and clients about realistic timelines has been a game-changer. It ensures expectations are aligned and gives me space to focus.

4) Take Breaks (Seriously): It sounds counterintuitive, but stepping away for a short walk can help recharge and boost focus when diving back into work.

At the end of the day, I am a new lawyer and certainly no expert. I am still learning and refining my approach, but these small changes have a made big difference in my day-to-day life!
